Patient Prostate Biopsy Instructions
-
With the approval of your Family Dr. or Cardiologist please discontinue your blood thinner’s [aspirin, Eliquis, Coumadin, ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve etc.] no later than one week before your prostate biopsy and for an additional three days past your biopsy. If you need pain control before or after your biopsy you may use Tylenol, tramadol or the Norco’s we prescribed you.
-
The day before your prostate biopsy you must start your Levaquin 750 mg once day and continue this uninterrupted for an additional 6 or 9 days depending on the prescription we give you and your comorbidities. If you are allergic to Levaquin please tell Amy, Paula or Nicole and another antibiotic will be substituted.
-
The night before surgery do not take anything by mouth that is either food or drink. Your anesthesiologist will guide you when and how to take your daily medications.
-
The morning of your biopsy prior to leaving your home please give yourself an enema. Any enema available at Walgreens, CVS or Walmart etc. will do. Remember to also take your antibiotic Levaquin before leaving your home and continue it once daily until completed.
-
After your biopsy expect to have pain around your rectum with bright rectal bleeding this should subside with 48 hours as long as you are faithfully not taking any blood thinner pain medication. You may also experience bloody urine for 2-3 days after your biopsy, but this too will subside.
-
About three days after your biopsy please call the office and we should be able to discuss the results of your biopsy. If we are fortunate to get them sooner, we will call you promptly.
-
If prostate cancer is your diagnosis you will be scheduled to discuss its treatment measures in a visit with me. Please bring your wife or significant other with you. I as a preference refer my prostate cancer patients to Barnes Hospital in St Louis, MO.
-
If you cannot stop your blood thinning medication one week before surgery or you cannot or did not perform an enema the morning of surgery, please be truthfully with your surgeon and nurse to avoid a potential serious prostate infection and hospitalization. We will work with you if you do not understand these instructions or have fears with your prostate biopsy, but remember we are never further than a phone call away.
